Term 4, Week 7 Sticky Question

This week we are going to revisit another one of the Question Keys we have looked at.

The What if...? Key

For example: What if there were no planes? 

We thought about not flying anywhere last term.  We realised it would take a lot longer to get overseas, it would be quieter at school, no one would be a pilot.

This week's question is:

What if there was no sound? 

You have to think of two good things about this idea and two negatives.

Te Whare Tapa Wha

 One way to describe how to be healthy.

Last term we began looking at Te Whare Tapa Wha. 

This is the wall display we finished recently to show the four-sided House of Hauora  (health).

The four parts to good health are: 

Taha Physical (tinana)

Taha Hinengaro ( mental/ mind health

Taha Whanau (family/relationships)

Taha Wairua (spiritual).

This term we have begun doing fitness then mindfulness every day. This is good for our taha wairua and our taha hinengaro and we think probably our taha whanau too.  Now we are so responsible about this helpful practice we are running the sessions ourselves.

Term 4 Week 1, a Class Blog post Written by all of us

 

Welcome to our First Blog Post for Term 4!

During the two week holidays, we did lots of fun and exciting things like go to Hamner, Launchpad, the beach,  visiting friends, playing basketball and a lot more.

Now that we are back at school this week's highlights have been: practising for our athletics on Friday - we are going to be amazing! Practising and presenting our speeches ready for the School Finals next week, we were amazing - our teachers said so! The speeches have been interesting, well presented and easy to hear.  For most of us seeing our friends was probably the best part about this week. 

We are also lucky to have a new student teacher, 

Miss White, with us for the next four weeks.

Week 6 Sticky Question Space Flight !

A long time ago space travel used to be for the super rich but in the coming years that may start to change a little bit….. 

 This week's question is about flight into space by some well known people including Jeff Bezos (creator of Amazon) and Elon Musk (creator of US car maker Telsa).

Both Jeff and Elon are racing to create flying rockets and spacecraft capable of taking paying passengers to the Moon and other space destinations in the coming years.

This weeks sticky question is this.......

Should we be allowing people like Jeff and Elon to create this kind of technology that is capable of taking people into space?

Week 5 term 3

Term 3, Week 3

Wow, is Week 3 of Term 3 really already over?!

So far, this has been a term of new experiences: 

We have a new Teacher!  Welcome and Haere Mai, Mr Brown!! 

It snowed!!!

At school on Monday we were delighted to watch the snow fall all around us. Some of us had never seen snow fall or feel it, so they got to feel snow for the very first time. It was lovely, exciting and great for our poetry writing. Please read our wonderful haiku on our slideshow.

 

We have a new Wheels Track!  We have done without our fields for all of Term 2 so it could be built.  Then this term,  we all had input into how we will use it.  We gave to those that helped make it happen,  hi-vis vests that we have all signed vests. Thank you!! Especially Gus Ward's dad, Andrew.  Finally, on Thursday it was opened,  we had a great time.  Our new track is very cool.

Te Mahuri Matariki Art Celebration

 Te Mahuri are Awesome Artists

As we shared earlier, we flexed our creative muscles in a variety of ways over the last half of the term. We worked really hard to prepare for our end of term Art Celebration. 

Our Matariki Art Celebration was a wonderful afternoon, we felt so supported by our whanau and loved performing for them. Ms Lange said she could hear us in our classroom! 

Matua Anton even got our families to do the Matariki 'macarena' with us!

There was a 'Guess the Artist' competition that we could all enter, there were  drawings by the What Now! presenters, a Crusader and all of our teachers and Linda! Can you guess who did which one?

Here is a presentation of some of our art. We not only made all the wonderful artworks we also wrote a  'bio' about ourselves, thought of titles for our art and set everything out in an eye-catching way.  Ms Lange and Mrs Munro were really proud of us for helping each other to get ready, we were a real team. They were also impressed by how determined we were to 'do ourselves proud' and make a real effort to present our work. 

We hope you think we did too! (We did!)

Art Exploration :)

Hey everyone, Well it is a very special time of year for us here in New Zealand as Matariki starts today. Now some of our overseas visitors might be a little confused about what Matariki is. But let the confusion be no longer. Matariki is the Māori New Year.

Matariki celebrations were once popular, but stopped around the 1940s. In 2000, they were revived and today are becoming an important part of our traditions again. Traditionally, Matariki was a time to remember those who had died in the last year. But it was also a happy event – crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been collected. With plenty of food in the storehouses, Matariki was a time for singing, dancing and feasting. A true New Year celebration!

In Te Māhuri, and at Yaldhurst, we have a number of activities and celebrations planned. Part of these celebrations is to explore Matariki art through New Zealand artists and then use that knowledge and understanding to create our own artwork. At the end of term we will be showcasing our artwork to our whānau, holding a silent auction of artwork and a 'Guess the Artist' competition featuring some famous faces as well as some less famous staff ones.

In our class we have been building up our art skills and knowledge. We don't know which artist we will choose to focus on yet, but we have been trying out some different skills based on known Matariki art and New Zealand artists. We have looked at artwork by Manuel Mitchell, Reuben Paterson and Raewyn Harris to inspire us. This is some of our work so far. As you can see it is all based around a koru.

Reuben Paterson is well known for colourful designs that fill the page with koru, colour and glitter!

 

Raewyn Harris makes all kinds of artworks including abstract art around New Zealand themes using koru.

 

Manuel Michell does really detailed digital art using Koru and Mathematics principles such as Reflection and Rotation he calls 'Fiboru' (Fibonacci x koru)

Pretty cool isn't it? Remember don't forget to keep checking back with us as we head towards the end of term and our finished Matariki artwork. In the meantime, happy Matariki everyone!!

Sticky Question - Week 7

 Wow, we loved reading all the responses to last week's sticky question. It was great to see you explaining your reasoning too.

Problem Schmoblems :)

 We are excellent problem solvers in Te Mahuri. No problem is too big or too small! Today we were given two tasks around pentagons.

For our first task we had to identify the vertices in this regular pentagon.   

                                                      

Next we had to join each vertex of the pentagon to the two vertices opposite. Of course we used rulers for this.

Lastly we had to count up how many triangles we saw. We all rushed back to our teachers with the number 10 and we were surprised (and a little confused) that 10 wasn't the answer. They encouraged us to look closely and search for the bigger triangles not just the small ones. Just like that the excitement continued. For any of you giving this a go, we won't spoil it by telling you the answer.

The second task involved us learning about the concept of tessellation. Once we understood this we investigated whether the regular pentagon would tessellate on its own or if it needed another shape. 

Did you know that soccer balls also use tessellation with pentagons and hexagons?

We are all Spelling Specialists in Te Mahuri!

This week we have been finding fun ways to learn about sounds and practise our spelling. 

Mrs Taylor's group have been using the Readiwriter programme which has made a fun change. Cooper told Ms Lange 'I have to learn the word 'questionnaire' this week!!'. 

Some of Ms Lange's group have been making Kahoot quizzes to test their spelling.  Look out families you are the next targets for these quiz-masters! Ms L was impressed they thought of a way to do this using Kahoot. It also means they get to practise the editing skills they have been honing in writing.

Here are some pictures of Zoe, Emma and Jhyral learning how to play 'Switch It'. This helps with listening to and identifying sounds needed and sound order in words.  At the end of the session Jhryal worked out 'champion' - isn't he though!

Some ways families can help at home: 

- getting your TM learner to write their spelling words in sentences. 

- asking them to explain this week's spelling rule.

- notice words in their books, on TV that have that spelling rule.

1st Time Bloggers

 It's official!! Our Year 4's have published their very first blog post. 

They are on an awesome digital journey and this blog post is just another part of that journey. There was a lot of excitement when they were able to embed their poster (google drawing) into the blog. We are very proud of them. Please take the time to go and check out their blog posts and maybe even leave them a comment.

We love to read!

 Mrs Taylor's Readers found out what their new theme for reading over the next three weeks will be today.  We spent our Reading session "getting hooked" on our new themes. We loved getting to share our new knowledge combined with our old knowledge with others in different groups. 

Panem is looking at lizards and they were interested to find out that the Komodo Dragon is the world's biggest and most vicious lizard. The members of Panem got out the metre rulers to find out exactly how big they could grow too. Did you know a Komodo Dragon can grow up to 2.5m? This is the length of Emily and Oliver together!

Did you know that the Corona Virus is not the only health pandemic in history? In 1918 the Spanish Flu caused an international pandemic too. Treasure Island are looking into this. This is what they had to say after checking out the 'get hooked' section.

Other groups are looking at the Otago Gold Rush, Antarctica and Giant Prickly Stick Insects.

Cross Country

 On a very cool, windy day our superstars took part in the school cross country event. With all the works going on at school, we had to use the Yaldhurst domain as our starting and end point. 

Our Year 4's had to run  1500m.   

Our Year 5's had to run 2.1km.

There were a lot of red faces by the end but everyone was super proud of themselves for finishing. 

Way to go Te Mahuri, way to go!!!!
