Many, many years ago there was a song called, 'We are the world' a song by U.S.A for Africa. In the song there were these words...'we are the world, we are the children, we are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving. There's a choice we're making, we're saving our own lives, it's true we'll make a better day, just you and me.'
If we are what makes up the world, then yes, kindness can change the world. It needs to be a choice we make though. Each one of us can choose to change the world one kindness at a time.
There are about 7.8 Billion people on earth. You may wonder 'how can my acts of kindness change the world, there are just so many people'?!
There was a book called Pay it forward, by Catherine Ryan Hyde, also a movie with the same name based on the book. In the book/film the main character Trevor comes up with an idea (inspired by a school assignment), that will change many lives. He decides that instead of returning a favour, he will pay it forward by doing good deeds for three people. Not just anything, but something they couldn't do for themselves. By doing these three things, the only thing asked of the recipients was that they in turn did three kind things for three other people.
What started out as one boys random acts of kindess, spread out across the world. One boy changed many lives, by not just thinking 'I'd love the world to be kind', he took action and started to make the difference happen.
You may be only one child, but so was Trevor. He made a huge difference in so many lives.
Who knows perhaps you will be the next Trevor and somehow make the world a kinder place to live in.

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this thoughtful comment. We have been telling the children about paying it forward, perhaps it's a movie we should share as a class. I did find it very hard to read the words to 'we are the world' without singing, such a powerful song. The children in Te mahuri have spent a great deal of this year focussing on respect, kindness and being considerate. From this, we believe, they have become very aware and mindful of the feelings of others and always being the very best them they can be. I do believe that humans can only feel self respect when they contribute to the society they live in rather than 'take'.

I believe that kindness means that if somebody is hurt you can make them feel better, kindness can be acting and words it can also sometimes be helping others which is an act. It can sometime go hand in hand with other things

I agree with you that kindness can change the world by being kind to somebody and then they pass it on to somebody else then that does it to another person and that just keeps happening. You could give a homeless person some money so other people fell good for that person and that person will have a house. From India.

ReplyDeleteI love the sticky question of the week, don't you agree Erica? I think that kindness can change the world, all you need to do is five things to three people . The fixe things that I would do are; NOT bossing people around, being fear, helping every one you now and they don't have to be your friend, If you think someone cant do something you ask do it for them and I have been saving the best for last so here we go, you do not have to see kindness but you can feel it.

Hi Ms Dods and yes kindness can change things like imagine a snareno with two people are going to a store one man says to the other man to go in and he says no you go in so they get angry of how goes in and then one man says ok I will go in and the other say no I will and a frashtaded tone so it will be so much that they go home a and when they think that they are gone someone else maybe there and they are nise avenchley all will be mad.

ReplyDeleteI think kindness can not change in the world because, if the world will change everyone will think to be mean to each other and think that they will not get told off, and being rude to teachers and others. Lots of rude people might think if they got told to be kind they might be rude because first they might be little and then they might be older than little kids they should of already knew about it to not to be rude. To be kind. I would give money to the people who have cancer and trying to save peoples lives because it is rude just caring about yourself and not helping other people they would feel so so sad and they might die. If people aren't poor and they are rich i wouldn't give money of things to them because they would have lots and lots of money because they are rich. If people are not as poor i will not give them the full price i would give to people i would give them haft price because cancer is badder than cancer because, they will die from having cancer.

ReplyDeleteI really like that question because guess what? It can! Just the other day our reliever was teaching us about generosity. He used this quote "Generosity awakens the conscience." Which means that if you do something kind to someone, they will want to do something kind for someone else. That nice thing could be as small as a smile or as big as befriending someone. Maybe the next time you go shopping you can smile at someone or help someone reach something.
